Recording your research

You may prefer to record all your findings with paper and pen, and there are charts or forms available you can print out to help you.

Alternatively if you have a computer, then there is a variety of software available which allows you to record everything you find and print off completed tree diagrams.  Don’t forget to make backups of your data files.  If your computer hard drive fails, you could easily lose ALL your family research.

Whatever method you choose to record your family tree, always make a note of the source of your evidence – what document was it that gave you that piece of information or who told you that piece of information.  As your research progresses you will never be able to remember how you learnt something and you may need to go back and verify certain details.
